Hungerford Rotarians - click here to go to the Members Area

Another member joins our ranks !

Dr Alex Anderson was formally welcomed into Hungerford Rotary Club at an induction ceremony on November 18th.
Alex joined the Hungerford Surgery in 2006 on the retirement of Jerry Bray and Hugh Pihlens and is a welcome addition to our ranks.
We all wish him a very warm welcome into Rotary and trust he will thoroughly enjoy his service and fellowship with us.

Sponsorship cheque donated to Rotary !

On the back of a successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, three intrepid employees of ADP - Geordie Taylor, Steve Robinson and Euan Smith - have very kindly elected to donate the £1000 that they raised in sponsorship to Hungerford Rotary. The money will be sent on to ChildLine - one of the two main charities that Hungerford Rotary is supporting this year.
Rotarians will be able to hear more about what must have been a very arduous trip in the New Year, when Geordie will be coming along to address one of our meetings.
We are very appreciative of this wonderful gesture and are equally pleased that it will go to such a worthy cause.
See  http://www.childline.org for more details on the charity and their work.

'Once in a Lifetime' reportback - Rotary helping out in central Sri Lanka

Although much publicity and good work was done in aid of those affected by the tsunami that struck Sri Lanka - there is still much needed work to be done in helping the rural communities who, although unaffected by that disaster, also need our support to provide for themselves and their families.
As a reminder, we elected to sponsor a child for three years at a total cost of £750 and also provide the funds for a hearing aid for a profoundly deaf child who otherwise would have had no avenue to receive this kind of treatment.
Colin and Rosemarie Bray have just arrived back from Sri Lanka and have given us news of how the donations we made will be used. The child we now sponsor lives in a rural area in central Sri Lanka and recently lost her mother in a tragic accident. Her father works as a casual labourer and struggles to provide food, shelter and clothing on his own, so our help will give much needed assistance in the coming years.
See  http://www.onceinalifetime.org.uk for more details on the charity and their work.

Aviation Evening

Tim Orchard - ex Concorde pilot (but very much a current pilot!) and now General Manager of Booker Airport  Buckinghamshire gave us an enlightening and interesting address with amusing anecdotes, video clips and slides covering his experiences, good and bad, of over 40 years in the cockpit. With experience of aircraft from the very first ‘fly by wire type’ of first world war fighters (both British and German) including the Gypsy Moth and the Tiger Moth - through to present day Concorde and Boeing 777s and including Balloon Flight, Helicopters and Gliders, Tim also reminded us that Britain celebrates 100 years of flying aircraft in 2008.

Tim demonstrated real passion for his interest and not many were unmoved by the brilliant Concorde slide show at the end that was so evocative of what achievements are possible where the will exists.

Visit by District Governor

There was a good turnout for the visit by DG Malcolm Boddington on 14th October.  We heard at first hand of the elaborate  preparation undertaken by prospective DGs for a year in office that requires total dedication; a year that embraces Rotary through from Club level to International matters.  With less than halfway into his year of office it was obvious that Malcolm is revelling in the challenge and enjoying the responsibility of furthering the ideals of Rotary in District 1090.  An inspiring talk, well received.

Meg Sturgess

Congratulations to Meg who was our 2008 RYLA candidate.  She gave us a comprehensive, well prepared ‘report back’ on her very successful and challenging week in Wales.  Well done Meg !  Thanks too go to Rotarians Robin Kellow and Ellie Dickins who put in a great deal of personal time and effort every year making the RYLA programme the success it is.

Visit to Hungerford by the Rotary Club of  Fontaine l’Eveque

What a great weekend!  Despite  French trawlermen blocking  the channel  tunnel and President  Alain’s  wife having to have a quick check at a London hospital the party arrived  at Hungerford  railway station just a couple of hours late and were met by President Bob  and a band of Rotarian taxi drivers.  After a quick snack at The Bear, it was a stroll around Hungerford with detailed explanations of the history and delights of Hungerford by Hugh and Mike. A short break for a wash and brush up and it was off on the safari supper – everyone in excellent spirits and – surprise surprise - everyone turning up at the right place at the right time (well nearly everyone !!)

The trip to Bath on the Saturday went well with the weather holding fairly well for a conducted tour of the city followed by lunch and a visit to the Roman Baths.  The Bath traffic  wasn’t  very kind to us so a late arrival back at The Bear left little time for a change before our Grand get- together in the Riverside Suite.  A disappointing  meal  did not diminish the jollity of the occasion and congratulations go to the two Presidents for speeches in French and English ! that made everyone feel at home .

All too quickly it was Sunday morning – departure time- which saw a good turnout to say farewell.   Thanks go to Mike and his twinning committee  for the excellent organisation that took many months – and of course to all other Rotarians who participated and made the event so successful.  Hopefully, the photos show the pleasure of what was generally felt to be a resounding success more than words can convey.

The beginning of the new Rotary year.

Tuesday, July 1st sees the reins of the club handed over to Bob Gray who takes over as President for the next 12 months.
In a recent presentation, Bob laid out his plans for the coming year ...

"We have enjoyed some very good times in Rotary in recent years, we’ve had fun, raised money and can be proud that we’ve lived up to the ideals of Rotary as well as we could have done.
In this coming year, I’d like to focus on some opportunities we can perhaps make more of — without changing too much the core of what it is we‘ve done so well in the past.
We will be looking at ‘doing’ as well as giving, we will be looking at how we can make the best use of monies raised and will also look at ways in which we can get funding for our activities from outside the club — either though District or through direct approaches for event sponsorship.
Expanding our community profile, exploring links with other groups to allow us to embark on new projects neither could perhaps do alone are our targets too—and perhaps most importantly, making sure that part of our goals, whatever we do, is to ensure that every Rotarian is supportive, engaged, enthusiastic and well informed."

We all look forward to another year, continuing the success that Hungerford Rotary has enjoyed since it's establishment, and in particular would like say a word of thanks to those leaving office this year - Robin Kellow and Bruce Mayhew - who have contributed greatly to the club!

President's Night Concert

Robin Kellow, outgoing President of the Hungerford Rotary Club salutes the Colonel's Fund for the Grenadier Guards by presenting Grenadier Lt. Colonel Henry Hanning with a cheque for nearly £2000.00.
The money was raised by some 200 attendees at his President's Night, celebrated by a Concert given by the 30 strong, nationally famous Kentwood Choir from Swindon, in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford.
"In a year that has seen our Hungerford Rotary Club donate some £18000 towards various charities" ex Grenadier Guards Musician Robin commented, "What great fun my year has been!!!   Membership of Rotary is so rewarding and I commend it to those who are community minded and wish to help others in need.   We would love to hear from you on Tel. No. 01672 540908.

Rotary Family Fun Day raises £3400 for charity!

The Family Fun Day on Saturday 28th was a great success and raised a total of over £3400 which will benefit a number of charities that are supported by Rotary.
A number of stalls offering such diversions as plate smashing, hoop-la and 'splat the rat' contributed much to the enjoyment of the day, and we were lucky of course to have wonderful weather for the event as well.
Our thanks go to all those who helped on the day, but particularly to our associates in Newbury Rotoract Club who assisted greatly with helping us get set up.
It was very much a club effort and many thanks are due to those who gave of their time and efforts to make it the success it undoubtedly was.

RYLA - the Rotary Youth Leadership Award

Do you know somebody who is between the ages of 18 & 25 and believe they have leadership potential which is either unrecognised or yet to be developed?
If so the Rotary Club of Hungerford may be able to help them.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) offers selected young people the opportunity to undertake a week long leadership training experience in Snowdonia under expert supervision and guidance. You must be reasonably physically fit and keen to do things that will help you realise your full potential.

There is also a similar RYLA programme for those who are disabled.

Interested? Please contact Hungerford Rotary President Robin Kellow on 01488 682745 for further details on the selection process

St George's Night bash a resounding success !

Roast Beef of England, Apple Pie, an abundance of Red and White, gripping readings, stirring music and singing by the Hungerford Town Band and the Bedwyn Millennium Choir, with "Jerusalem" of course, all added up to a splendid evening at the Croft Hall in Hungerford to celebrate St. Georges Day in typical Hungerford Rotary style.
Much merriment and a little patriotic fervour all combined to mark the feast day of the patron saint of England with considerable enthusiasm by all those present!

Joan Bond joins as an honorary member

We are pleased to be able to welcome to the club our latest member - Joan Bond, who was invited by our members to become one of our number as an honorary member at our meeting on Tuesday 5th February.
Joan has been a regular contributor to our efforts over the years and we are pleased to be able to recognise her contribution in this way. She is indeed very welcome!

Dougie Galliver

It is with great sadness we mark the passing of Dougie Galliver, a respected member of this club.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Indian motorcycle odyssey raises £15000

Hungerford Rotary were pleased to be able to hand over a cheque for £200 as a contribution towards nearly £15,000 raised for Great Ormond Street hospital by a group of intrepid motorcyclists who took part in a sponsored ride in India.  Peter Farmer, part of the management team at ADP in Hungerford, accepted the cheque as his 'reward' for successfully negotiating some very difficult riding conditions over 9 days. The total amount raised by Peter and four companions was close to £15000 - a terrific effort.

Hungerford Rotary Club celebrates 21 years!

Saturday 26th saw 80 Rotarians and guests celebrate the 21st anniversary of the grant of the founding charter of Hungerford Rotary Club. Entertained by a highly amusing after dinner speaker, the gala event at the Corn Exchange was greatly enjoyed by all who attended.
The milestone of 21 years of service was also marked by a message of congratulations received from HRH Prince Philip.
As well as being a social success, the dinner raised £750 pounds for Sightsavers, which was given to the speaker, Rotarian Geoff Mackey, on behalf of the club.

Recent successes

Hungerford Rotarians have had a number of events leading up to the Christmas period.
In December we twice arranged doorway collections with the kind permission of Somerfield - the first on behalf of the Newbury Weekly News for their over 80's parcel fund and the second on our own account for the Army Benevolent Fund, for which we raised over £700.  We are grateful to Hungerfordians for their generosity.
On December 11th, we held our Christmas Party at The Bear and a tremendous night was had by all. Our appreciation to Graeme Sleeman for arranging the activities and acting as MC.

Tom Sperry's Fastnet adventure

Tom Sperry came along to a meeting recently to talk about his experiences in the 2007 Fastnet race. Unfortunately, we couldn't arrange a projector on the day for him to illustrate the talk with photographs and images of the route, so Tom has kindly provided the slideshow for us. To read the slideshow you'll need a Microsoft Powerpoint viewer, which you can get from the download centre on the Microsoft website. Tom's presentation can be downloaded from here but be warned, it's a hefty download at 9Mb!

Another member joins our ranks !

Annabel King was formally welcomed into Hungerford Rotary Club at an induction ceremony on October 16th 2007.  We wish her a very warm welcome.

Jazz Evening in aid of The Wheelchair Foundation

On a perfect August evening, 80 members, partners and friends enjoyed a splendid evening of good food, good jazz and good
company at Dixon’s Farm –the event organized by the International Committee.

The event was in aid of Wheelchair Foundation UK, and the funds from the evening were boosted by an auction run by Colin Ponting, whose hilarious stories had the whole room well entertained.

The event raised about £2600 for Wheelchair UK. Thanks must go to David and Wendy Wallis for providing the wonderful venue, and to all of the members of the International committee.

Collection at Membury Services

Well done to all those members and partners who helped with the collection on both sides of Membury Services on the 18th and 19th of July - £927.15 was collected for our charity account !

Club stats for the past Rotary year

Well done Hungerford Rotarians is the message coming out of the recent news that our average monthly attendance figures for last year worked out at just a shade over 80% !
Membership currently stands at 29, added to which we have two honorary members.

During the last Rotary year - we distributed almost £7000 to a dozen different worthy causes.

This certainly shows the commitment of members - both to the club and it's activities - and a large vote of thanks go to all those that supported our efforts last year !

A message from Past President David Howard

My thanks to all members who have organised and supported the club during my year as president. The events were well attended and enjoyed by club members, their partners and friends.

Membership has increased in the last twelve months adding strength to the club. This shows that Hungerford Rotary Club is healthy and that participation is the key to its success, as the District Governor said: “If you aren’t enjoying it you’re not doing it properly.”

I hope the club will continue to run in a relaxed fellowship atmosphere, achieving its aims without the need of an efficient business like style. Fun, fellowship and fundraising in that order is the key to our success as a club.

Robin, may you have all these three in abundance in your year as president !

Our visit to Culham JET

On July 4th, quite a few of us were fortunate enough to be able to visit the Nuclear Fusion laboratory at Culham in Oxfordshire.
I would doubt anyone who does so could fail to come away anything other than in awe of the work that takes place there - where scientists from all over the world are truly at the cutting edge of research in this field.
Congratulations go to our hosts and guides who helped us make sense of a subject that really does makes rocket science look like child's play.
Many thanks to Rotarian Nick Fritz for arranging this tremendously informative evening.

More new members join our ranks !

We have recently been very fortunate in our recruitment successes and have been joined by three new members. We are proud to welcome John Perkins, Myles Young and Susan Hofgartner to the club and wish them welcome indeed.

New RIBI President

Yorkshire businessman Allan Jagger will be inaugurated on 30th June as President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland at The Armouries in Leeds. He will lead the 58,000 Rotarians in 1845 clubs who are committed to service at home and abroad.
The Presidential handover ceremony will be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Leeds as well as by more then 300 Rotarians and their partners.
Allan is a member of the Rotary Club of Elland.
During the next 12 months, Rotary Clubs will be addressing critical issues in communities around the world - in particular literacy and education programmes, health and hunger and water management projects.
In Great Britain and Ireland, Rotary Clubs will also focus on support for Cancer Research and Cancer Care to help raise funds and awareness and help save lives by earlier detection.
The next major focus will be The Rotary Foundation,  Rotary's corporate charity, which is dedicated to furthering international understanding, goodwill, and peace and which gives more than £30 million every year to educational and humanitarian programmes. Allan Jagger, incoming President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland said "The Foundation relies on the enthusiastic support of Rotarians voluntarily giving generously of their time and money, and has become one of the foremost non-governmental foundations in the world. It is said that every minute of every day Rotary will touch the lives of millions somewhere in the world. The Rotary Foundation is one of the world’s leading charitable foundations and each Rotarian can be justly proud of its achievements. Rotary is recognised by international agencies and governments throughout the world as an effective organisation that doesn’t discriminate against age, sex and religion and can move invisibly across borders.”

Twinning visit set for 2008 !

We're very pleased to announce that our sister club Fontaine L'Eveque has accepted our invitation to spend a joint weekend together in Canterbury, with a format similar to the one we so much enjoyed with them in Ostend. They will come over to Canterbury on the evening of Friday 3rd of October and spend the weekend there. Hungerford Rotarians will travel down by coach on the Saturday morning to meet them for coffee, take in the sights and then partake in what promises to be a very nice lunch !   We will have tea/drinks together in the late afternoon and then the Hungerford team will return home that evening.  The Twinning sub-committee will be working on the fine detail over the next few months and will keep members up to date with progress.

2007 District Conference

A group of 6 club members (with partners) attended this years District 1090 Conference at Eastbourne. As always, the entire conference was planned perfectly - a really professional event.

The weekend was a mixture of highly inspirational presentations by various Rotarians describing their particular experiences of service, and the challenge of Rotary Work Worldwide. These included talks on Mercy Ships,  Nyumbani,  Diabetes, childrens' hospices in Romania, and residential units in Sierra Leone.
Interspersed with these were a number of guest speakers, including Rear Admiral Tim Laurence, MVO, ADC (talking on "The Sea, the Ice, and the Global Challenge"), and Dee Caffari - the first woman to sail solo and non-stop around the world single-handed - the "wrong" way! Wow! What a lady!

The entertainment on the Friday evening was superb, as was the Banquet and Ball on the Saturday evening and we were delighted when Hungerford won the award for the best website in District 1090. President David accepted the award on behalf of the club.

There was much to think about, much for us all to take away and consider.

The next conference will be in Bournemouth on 4-6th April 2008. There were well over 1,000 delegates at Eastbourne this year. Let's try to encourage an even bigger delegation from Hungerford next April. It's thoroughly worthwhile.

Antiques Extravaganza

Friday 23rd March saw our sell-out fundraiser go off very well with just short of £1800 being raised for our charity funds - a cheque for £1000 of which was presented at the end of the evening to the Lambourn branch of Riding for the Disabled.

A job very well done and thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the event the success it was - and of course especially so to the experts who gave their time so generously and helped make the evening both a great deal of fun and very informative.

New image for Rotary

A new image for Rotary was unveiled recently - replacing the well known "Service above self" graphic that has been around a long time .......

"Humanity in motion" with its modern graphic has received mixed reaction, but whatever the logo under which we act, the work of Rotary continues !

Quiz night & Paul Harris Award ceremony

Well done to Graeme Sleeman for organising a really good evening for us on Tuesday - although many of us would have liked to have done a little better with the quiz questions !  An excellent turnout ensured that we raised enough money to meet our objective for the evening of funding our RYLA candidates.

Also on the evening, the Club was delighted to award the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship to Elizabeth Davies, in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the community of Hungerford through her untiring work for HADCAF – Hungerford and District Community Arts Festival. Congratulations to Elizabeth.

New members

We have been very fortunate recently in our recruitment and have been joined by four new members. We are proud to welcome Nick Furr, Nick Fritz, James Brown and Jerry Bray to the club.

New tariff at The Bear

Just a reminder to everyone that the new price for our regular meetings comes into play from the 1st January and is £8.50 in cash or cheque (no cards under £10.00).
Partners evenings with buffet style food will now be £10.50. Also, as I am sure you will all be aware, we must now apologise by 10.00 a.m. on the MONDAY not Tuesday morning. This helps the chef with his planning but is not set in stone in emergencies. It would be appreciated though if we can all co-operate as best we can.

Christmas Dinner

The Christmas Dinner was again a huge success. The Kennet Suite at The Bear looked splendid, themed in black, white and silver, with coloured balloons, the food was excitement, and the entertainment by members and friends was well up to the usual standard. Thanks go to everyone who contributed to making the evening such a success - and especially to our Master of Ceremonies for the event - Graeme Sleeman.

Desert Island Discs

I'm sure everyone who attended the Desert Island Discs enjoyed an interesting evening with Rotarian Ray Stebbings, covering what has obviously been his very full and interesting life.
Having just passed the milestone of 60 years membership of Rotary - a remarkable achievement in itself  - the evening saw us, in traditional Desert Island Discs style, walk though some of the highlights of Ray's 90 years.
The previous week had seen Ray honoured by the DG with the presentation of a certificate of service signed by the President of Rotary International
marking the achievement of 60 years of service to Rotary and the community - and every member of the club is pleased to echo these very best wishes !

Did you buy a Rotary Christmas Pudding ?

The Rotary label on top of the pudding should peel away to reveal the contents information and cooking instructions, but it has come to our attention that the top label sometimes pulls the lower label away with it. If this happens it should still be possible to separate the two labels and reveal the instructions, but to ensure that recipients of the puddings are not inconvenienced, we have re-printed the insructions here.

A weekend in Ostend

The last weekend in October saw 16 or so of our number off to Ostend to meet up with our twin club from Fontaine-L'Eveque in Belgium.
There were about 24 in their group, and together, we had a great day together on Saturday. They had arranged guided walks around Ostend, followed by a splendid luncheon at the Thermae Palace hotel (in the function room where the local Ostend Rotary clubs meet, with a panoramic window overlooking the sea). French and English with varying degrees of skill were spoken, well lubricated by the fruit of the vine !
In the afternoon, we visited the very lovely Japanese Gardens, followed by a tour of a three masted sail training ship.
The day ended with farewell drinks at a local hostelry which rounded off a very well planned day that went far to cement the links between our two clubs.

An evening with the RIBI President

A group of Rotarians from Hungerford joined with Newbury and Thatcham clubs to spend an evening in the company of the RIBI President Peter Offer.
Peter spoke convincingly of the work being done through the preferred projects for this year as well as talking about his visits to other countries finding out about how Rotary was influencing people's lives on a daily, practical basis.
Peter's own commitment was very evident, reinforced by some insights into what for many of us would be an unenviable schedule of visits around the RIBI territory.

Tools For Self Reliance update

On Saturday 23rd, a group of Hungerford Rotarians manned a collection point on the steps of our Town Hall and over the day received hundreds of individual tools and a total of seven sewing machines from the residents of Hungerford.  As well as such a good response on the day, we also had the promise from one or two people of more to come and Rotarians will be making a number of individual collections over the coming weeks.
Visitors to the town who dropped by to see what the stall was all about were given brochures with a request that if they had old tools or sewing machines at home, to drop them into their own local Rotary club.
Saturday's collection doesn't see the end of the club's involvement in the TFSR project, and we'll be accepting tools and sewing machines for the balance of the year from anyone who would like to donate them.
Many thanks to those Rotarians who gave their time and efforts in a number of ways to make the day the success it was.
We plan on delivering the tools to the Southampton refurbishment centre of TFSR within the next week or two.

Strange Laws of Olde England

Don't worry too much if you missed Graeme Sleeman's talk about some of the quirks and anachronistic laws we still have on the statute books - those who were present enjoyed it enough to ask Graeme to come back and give us episode two !  As ever, when we have an interesting subject such as this, we were beaten by the clock and look forward to hearing more about what strange fates may lie in store for the unwary transgressor !

20's Jazz Night - a resounding success !

Friday 8th saw Rotarians, partners and friends enjoy a wonderful evening's entertainment, this time organised by the International committee.  The 20's jazz themed supper which was held at David Wallis's home in Lambourn saw over £2500 raised for the Mercy Ships charity - and having fun doing it says a lot about what Hungerford Rotary involves.  Many thanks go to the organisers and helpers who put so much work in to make this another very successful Rotary event.

A visit to HRC by District Governor, Jean Charnak

Tuesday last saw Hungerford Rotary Club visited by our new DG, Jean Charnak. A good turn out of members listened to Jean lay out her ideas for the future as well as receiving her thanks for the efforts of the club in recent times in many of the different areas we've been involved in.  We very much look forward to seeing Jean again whenever her busy schedule allows it.

Membury collection hailed a success

With almost £1000 collected over the weekend at Membury, we can safely say this was another success - with thanks going to those who were able to participate and of course to Secretary Mike for yet again arranging things so well. Mike will write thanking Membury and hopefully reserving a similar slot next year.

Tools For Self Reliance project

Hungerford Rotary Club have recently embarked on a major project in 2006, having adopted a UK based charitable organisation called Tools For Self Reliance.
In some of the poorest countries in Africa, communities are being helped by TFSR, who give practical help to practical people - by putting basic tools and equipment into the hands of individuals who can then put them to work to feed their families and build their communities.
TFSR have some 700 part time volunteers at a number of centres in the UK who refurbish used tools and - working with local organisations who support rural artisans and craft workers with skills training – send them as complete toolkits to communities in Africa.
By giving good quality tools a second lease of life, this project turns what would otherwise be discarded and replaced, into a source of advantage for those who can make very good use of them.

President's Night

Keith Haddrell's President’s Night on Tuesday 13th June was a most successful “Murder Mystery”, by “Alter Ego” – four excellent thespians arranged by Veronica Bailey. They certainly kept us puzzled and perplexed as to who was the guilty party! A fine climax to a most successful year.

Jazz Night

The Jazz Night on 16th June was also a great success, with some fine jazz playing, and excellent food. Well done to all concerned, especially to David Small.

Farm Tour (See the gallery)

About 26 Rotarians partners and guests had a magical guided tour around part of the Sutton Estate. The weather was perfect, and the river walk took us to exceptional scenery. Thanks go to Mike Dorward for organising it with Allan Snook, to Eric Mew and the team from Sutton Estates for such an informative tour, and to Allan for arranging the excellent meal at Deanwood Park Golf Club. An excellent evening!

Rotarians join the Pudding Club !  (See the gallery)

Twenty members and friends enjoyed a splendid evening at The Pudding Club on Friday 2nd June.  On a most perfect early summer’s evening, we wallowed luxuriously through no fewer than seven wonderful puddings. A thoroughly memorable evening!

Honey tasting !

The Kennet Suite was full on Tues 30th May when the Club hosted a very unusual event – a Honey Tasting! Following the dinner, and a presentation by the District 1090 District Governor, David Buckland, we settled down to a beautifully crafted and professionally illustrated talk by Susan Hofgartner on honey – and the many products produced by the Oxfordshire firm of Rowse. We all had the pleasure of partaking in a tutored tasting of six delicious honeys, after which we were able to take home a “party pack” of various products for our further enjoyment. Well done, Susan!

Rebuilding in India

We received an interesting report from the Rotary 1090 District Communications Committee on the rebuilding work being done in India. Read more here

Hull Revisited

Those of us who were able to attend last weeks talk by Eric Smith on Hull were delighted that he painted for us a picture of Hull that we perhaps would not have imagined for ourselves. The topic was well researched and included many interesting facts among the reminiscences of his days as a young man there.
I'm sure there are other Rotarians who might be persuaded to regale us with similar stories - but Eric has set a high standard for those who wish to follow !

St Valentine's Dinner

There can't be anyone who attended the St Valentines dinner who wasn't at least very well entertained - and most probably quite amazed - at the wonderful show of magic tricks and legerdemain that we were party to on Tuesday. A great vote of thanks to the organisers for a splendid evening.
How my £20 note got inside that orange will remain a mystery !

First meeting of 2006

Our first meeting of 2006 was destined to be a quiet affair as we didn't have a guest speaker - but Mike Dorward stepped up and gave us a fascinating insight into the process of researching family military history, illustrated with some interesting results he has had with his own ancestors, one of whom fought at Waterloo. Lunch was excellent too which we hope can be maintained !
Graeme Sleeman reminded us all about the Quiz night - and suggested that any unwanted Christmas gifts could be brought along on the 31st to bolster the offerings in the Arthur Ivy auction.
